Government publishes lists of beneficiaries of quarry exploitation licenses in the Eastern Province

In a move that will reignite the debate over quarries and their beneficiaries, the government, represented by Minister of Equipment and Water Nizar Baraka, published extracts of the permit receipts handed out to quarry operators in 2023, along with a list of quarries that were closed during the same year.
The announcement was made through tables published in the ministerial decree registered under number 507.25, which was included in the latest issue of the Official Gazette. These tables revealed the closure of nearly 160 quarries distributed across the Kingdom's various regions and provinces, with different types of materials extracted from each of them.
The ministry has granted more than 450 licenses to open new quarries across the country, including 36 in the Eastern Province. These licenses were issued to companies, individuals and cooperatives working in various fields, especially in the extraction of materials used in construction and road building.
The decision has been welcomed, as it sheds light on data that had previously escaped public scrutiny. For many years, the quarrying industry has been a monopoly of certain influential groups, making it a rentier activity par excellence.
The lists of beneficiaries of the 2023 quarrying licenses are available to the public via the online version of the Official Gazette (issue 7395), starting on page 2154.
