Nizar Baraka reveals the progress of Nador Port during the 2026 budget presentation

Economy of the East

Nizar Baraka, Minister of Equipment and Water, revealed that the West Mediterranean port of Nador is ready and that operations will start by the end of 2026. This came during the presentation of his sector's draft budget for the year 2026 to Parliament on Monday, November 10, 2025, where he provided details on the progress of strategic projects, including the Nador West Mediterranean Port, which is expected to enhance the logistics system in the eastern region.

Agreements have been signed with major companies to ensure the processing of 3 million containers per year

The minister told the Infrastructure Committee that the port is “ready,” noting that “operations will start by the end of 2026.” He added that agreements have been signed with international companies, especially CMA CGM, which specializes in container shipping, to ensure the processing of 3 million containers per year.

Connecting the port to various destinations

Baraka emphasized that the port should not only benefit the Dreouche and Nador regions, but that all regions should benefit from it. In this context, steps have begun to connect the port to Fez, where a motorway will be built between Kersef and Nador. In addition, there are a series of roads leading to Taweret, Kersef, Al Hoceima, Oujda and Saïdia via Route 16.

The minister emphasized the need to expand or strengthen these roads to ensure effective connectivity. He noted that all these regions will have industrial zones that can benefit from the port of Nador. He also expressed the desire to establish a link with Fez-Meknes so that this region can also benefit from the port, especially since the distance from the port to Fez does not exceed two hours.

Tangier Mediterranean Model

The western Mediterranean port of Nador was designed to be a transit and container transportation center. The government based its development on the governance and development model that has proven successful in the Tanger Med port. The port is expected to stimulate economic activity in the eastern region, especially through the establishment of industrial zones that benefit from the proximity of port infrastructure.

These developments reflect the trend towards strengthening Morocco's logistics infrastructure to serve the national economy and support regional competitiveness. The bet remains on translating these projects into a tangible reality that contributes to creating jobs and attracting investments.
