900 million dirhams to develop the Nador Corniche and improve infrastructure

Economy of the East
Local authorities in Nador are planning to allocate nearly 900 million dirhams to continue upgrading the city, as part of a comprehensive program aimed at developing the Corniche and improving urban infrastructure. This program includes the expansion of the Corniche and the rehabilitation of the historical center known as the Nador Historical Center, in addition to projects with territorial, social and economic dimensions aimed at enhancing the attractiveness of the city and raising the quality of life.
The Minister of Interior Abdelwafi Lefthit made the announcement in response to two written questions by parliamentarian Fatima El Kachouti about the deteriorating infrastructure of the Corniche of Nador and its public facilities. The minister noted that the Nador Corniche is one of the most prominent urban and tourist spaces within the framework of the project to develop the shores of Lake Marcheka, and has contributed since its inauguration to improving the city's landscape.
Field anomalies requiring intervention
Recent field inspections revealed deficiencies in public equipment and facilities, including green spaces, toilets, playgrounds, sidewalks and urban equipment, in addition to observations related to hygiene and public lighting. In response to this situation, the concerned authority mobilized available resources and intensified coordination with local partners to address urgent aspects and ensure the continuity of public facilities.
An expanded meeting was held on June 18, 2025, chaired by the regional authority and attended by the Director General of the Marcheka Lake Site Development Agency, to study the shortcomings and take immediate practical measures. This meeting resulted in a set of urgent measures to improve the status of public facilities in the Corniche.
A sustainable solution to watering green spaces
The minister emphasized that the ministry's interests are paying particular attention to finding a final and sustainable solution to the issue of watering green spaces in the city of Nador. In this context, a partnership agreement was signed to reuse treated water at the pumping stations in Nador and Beni Ansar for irrigation purposes. The total cost of this project is estimated at 40 million dirhams, funded equally by the Ministry of Interior and the Agency for the Development and Investment of Lake Marcheka, while the technical study for the project is currently underway.
The Agency for the Development of the Marcheka Lake Site explained that it is making continuous efforts to maintain the green spaces, but these efforts have been affected by the repercussions of the water stress experienced by the region. This situation prompted the agency to change the irrigation system from using potable water to using tanker trucks with treated water from the Beni Ansar plant as a temporary solution, given the size of the development area and the pressure of the drought.
The minister concluded by noting that the regional authority will continue to coordinate with various stakeholders to enhance the governance of the project and ensure the sustainability of its public facilities, thus increasing the attractiveness of the city of Nador and achieving the desired developmental impact at the regional level.
